Advancing Native Media Access

Since 2004, Native Public Media has provided critically needed leadership within Native America by supporting the acquisition of new frequencies, deploying new communications platforms, drafting rewrites to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, generating new funding for Native media, and advocating at the national level for a media ownership hearing specific to Native America.  Native Public Media is the only organization strategically positioned to advance Native media at the community, tribal and national level.  It brings to the table deep roots in Indian Country, rich policy expertise and advocacy experience, a strong commitment to localism, and a national scope.

Native Public Media:

  • Advocates for Native media wherever media policy and infrastructure issues are discussed, including before: Congress; the Federal Communications Commission; the Copyright Office; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; the National Telecommunications and Information Administration; the Public Radio Satellite System; funding sources; and throughout the arena of media regulatory and technological development.

  • Assists tribal nations and Native communities in pursuing opportunities to access and control traditional and new media outlets through spectrum auctions, license acquisition, competition in emerging services, access to wireless content and technologies, and design of appropriate funding strategies to sustain media activities.
  • Actively participates in regional and national discussions and policymaking related to media reform and media democracy. Native Public Media will proactively educate Native Nations and communities about the implications for them of media reform and democracy debates. Native Public Media will also advocate for the interests of Native people among non-Native organizations interested in expanding media access among underserved and underrepresented communities.
